Toddler Enola Holmes (Sophie Dixon) and her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) are seen playing chess in a couple of flashbacks. Chess is also mentioned as Sherlock's (Henry Cavill) favorite game.
Throughout the movie, we see Enola using blocks with letters to decipher words. Word games were already popular during the XIX and early XX centuries with titles like Abcdarian or Anagrams.
