Tom (Paul Bettany) and Bill (Jeremy Davies) play checkers in the prologue. Bill doesn´t want to play because he never gets to win and pretends to have lost a piece. Later in the movie, Bill gets to defeat Tom thanks to Grace´s (Nicole Kidman) teachings.
There is a third and brief appearance of the checkers board towards the end of the movie, when Grace is in a... compromised situation.
